Blind Pioneer

Sutkus has entered the history of Lithuanian photography not only as one of its most prominent artists, but also as a champion of the photographic community: in 1969, he helped to establish the Lithuanian Photography Society (known since 1989 as the Lithuanian Union of Art Photographers) in Vilnius, and was its long-term chairman. He created several photography series that were brought together in the cycle People of Lithuania, which spans his entire creative career. In his work, he continues the tradition of the Western School of humanist photography, seeking to capture the essence of a time and place, to convey the psychology of his subjects, and to create an emotionally compelling image. The everyday scenes captured in his photographs become a universal metaphor for human existence.
