Tainan Park

Tainan Park

When Lee shot his works, he prefers to use the Rolleiflex 120 camera and arrange the composition in advance. When he encountered the scene he wanted to shoot, he did not need to look at the camera but quietly adjusted the focus with his left hand, and pressed the shutter with his right hand.  He can captured the image of the moment before people discover the camera’s existence, so the posture of the people can be naturally presented.

In Tainan Park, a well-dressed man sits on a bench on the left side of the image, sleeping with his legs crossing and body leaning sideways. The two women at the right rear sit leisurely with relaxed expressions. Lee Ming-tiao often travelled all over Taiwan to take photos of the lives of local people. Although the themes of these pictures are ordinary fragments of life, they show a sense of authenticity through the photographer’s lens, conveying the kindness and simplicity of the locals. Lee said, “if the people in the photos happen to see the photography series, I believe they will laugh out loud, reminiscing how innocent and lovely, how healthy and lively, and how beautiful and generous they were at that time.”
