Two Men on the Hill

Two Men on the Hill

Lin Chuan-tsu’s enthusiasm, time and energy devoted to photography was praised by the photography circle at that time. Whenever there was an opportunity, Lin often invited fellow photographers, such as Hong Kong-da and Chen Geng-bin to visit Wushe for photo shooting of the indigenous. The shooting process of nearly ten years has also left a considerable image record for the world.

In Two Men on the Hill, two tribesmen wearing traditional costumes sit opposite to each other, only making eye contact. There is a slight difference in height between the two, which echoes the ridge line. The ornamentation on their clothing is also presented in curves, enriching the linearity of the image.

Lin Chuan-tsu’s rich experience at the photo studio has made him excel at interacting with the photographed or maintaining a proper sense of distance. His style of framing is carefree but with reserved temperament. The characters under Lin Chuan-tsu’s lens sometimes make eye contact with the photographer, while some are unaware of his existence and focus on the things in front of them. Such “natural presence” and “appropriate objectivity” may be Lin’s secret to shooting the life of ordinary citizens, which also allows the scene to reflect vivid and warm characteristics. Though images of people from different cultural backgrounds, Lin Chuan-tsu can always show the care of a watcher.
