Vikšraitis followed the Lithuanian photographic zeitgeist in focusing on rural people, but his photographs offer a unique and even radical view of life in the provinces. The subjects he captures are on the margins of society, and, as he immortalises their poverty-stricken lives, Vikšraitis sets the scene carefully; he does not avoid irony or the grotesque, but at the same time maintains a sincere, empathetic relationship with his subjects. His expressive photographs captivatingly reveal the vanishing everyday life of the countryside and describe its complex social realities.
