Šonta created photography cycles in various genres, which are characterised by modern, ascetic expression, refined composition, and precision of form. He was interested in social themes and created series that captured socially marginalised groups. One of his most striking series, School is My Home (1980–1983), reveals the everyday life in boarding schools for children with special needs, and highlights the contrast between the idealised perception of childhood and the gloomy special-needs institutions. His courage and determination to capture something that did not officially exist in the Soviet era was criticised by the authorities at the time.
