Flying Egrets - 1

Flying Egrets - 1

In the 1950s, there was a wave of salon photography in pursuit of pure aesthetics in Taiwan’s photography circle. The theme of flowers and birds has always been favored by photographers. On the spur of the moment, Lin would also invite fellow photographers to take pictures in the suburbs. For example, ecological and documentary photographer Yu Ru-ji was one of his study companions as they took photos together and participated in joint exhibitions. The spectacular scene of “a flock of white egrets surging up the blue sky” deeply attracted the attention of the creator, as if it is a portrayal of the lofty ambitions of his photography friends. The 1950s was also a period of vigorous development of the photography circle. The publication of photographic pictorials has heightened the depth and breadth of photographic creation in Taiwan. In the same period, various photography societies have also been established. In 1955, Lin Chuan-tsu and thirteen senior photographers in Taichung, including Hong Kong-da, Chen Geng-bin, and Chen Shui-ji, established the Taichung Photographic Research Association, later renamed as the Photographic Society of Taichung (1961), and served as the director. Lin spared no efforts to promote photography-related activities. With the long-shot composition, the Flying Egrets series feature flocks of birds soaring freely, showing the various postures of egrets.
