Deserted Road

Deserted Road

Landscape paintings is a very specific concept and category in Western art history, reflecting people’s meditation on the land and nature. In its development, the genre has become an important subject for experimenting new artistic styles. The grouping of different objects constitutes an identifiable space. Photographers take photos from different angles with their observations and portrayals of the locations, to present diverse landscape photos.

Lee Ming-tiao’s Desert Road, taken in 1960, is a photographic work using landscape paintings as a creative reference, deliberately framing the view from a peculiar angle with full consideration of the composition. Half of the image is occupied by the grass by the roadside, and the other half the sky in the distance. The “path” extends from the foreground all the way back to the sky. At the border, a cone-shaped bush stands alone, adding a touch of loneliness and bleakness to the work. With the black-and-white layout, the composition is simple, fully creating a desolate and poetic atmosphere.
